- Scope and ContentGeorge Purser: the prisoner had been at work for him at Aspley Guise up to 26 April. On Saturday 28 April the prisoner came to him at Leighton and charged him with five and a half days work up to and including the Saturday. The prisoner was to hang a room at Aspley on Saturday with a paper with a green pattern. Humpage had received money on account. He paid Humpage 12 shillings and a halfpenny and he had already had 7 shillings 10 pence halfpenny on account. He had held back 3 shillings at the prisoners request so he would have money on the Monday. If the prisoner had completed the five and a half days work he would have been entitled to 22s 11d. On 1 May he was at Aspley and ascertained the Saturday work had not occurred. He had been at Aspley on the Friday. The prisoner had received 4 shilling and 2 pence for working on the Saturday, more than he was entitled to. He paid the prisoner the 3 shillings which he had kept back. The prisoner was due to work for him on the Monday but absconded and he saw no more of him until the following Saturday. In the meantime he had obtained a warrant for the prisoner obtaining 4 shillings 2 pence by false pretences. He had also given the prisoner a shilling to pay another workman. [cross examination] the prisoner had worked 5 hours overtime up to Thursday 26 April at a rate of 5 pence an house. He had given him the 3 shillings on the Monday and the prisoner had said it was all right. Statement of the accused: he had worked 10 and a half hours overtime and the prosecutor said he had only worked 5 hours. He did not recall having 7s 6d and had no more than his wages.
