  • Scope and Content
John Brown of Eaton Socon, common brewer - he first engaged Robinson in summer 1842. His wages were to be 14s a week; his duty was to collect orders, to keep his books and collect his debts. Robinson remained in his service on those terms until February 1844 when he agreed to give him £50 pa and to keep a horse for him. Robinson left his service on 29 August. Robinson went round to his customers once a month taking what was due to him. On 21 February Mr Luff of Colmworth owed him 11s 6d which Robinson should have collected. Robinson never accounted for it. Mr Rogers of Chelveston was sent a gallon cask of porter on 21 May by order received through Robinson and Rogers’ name was entered in his ledger as owing 10s 6d. The figure of 10.6 has been altered to 10.0 in the ledger. Rogers accounted to him on 9 August for 10s only. The entry for that date is in Robinson’s handwriting. The receipt issued to Rogers in Robinson’s hand shows 10s 6d as paid. On 30 June and 4 August 1843 a nine gallon cask of porter was delivered to James Pentlow or Raunds. The charge was 10s 6d for each. Robinson only accounted for 20s. The receipts of 31 July and 21 October 1843 were each for 10s 6d received from Mr Pentlow. John Luff of Colmworth, farmer – he has been a customer of John Brown and had a 9 gallon cask of ale and a 9 gallon cask of table beer last February. The price was 11s 6d. He later met Robinson at St Neots and paid him that amount. Robinson has since said he remembers being paid the money. Susanna Rogers, wife of John Hall Rogers of Chelveston (Northants) – on 10 August she paid Robinson 10s 6d in discharge of a bill due from her husband to Brown. Robinson gave her the receipt written in pencil now produced for 10s 6d which he wrote in her presence. James Pentlow of Raunds (Northants), miller – he had 2 casks of porter from Mr Brown in 1843, delivered at different times. He paid Robinson 10s 6d for each cask for which Robinson gave him receipts. Robinson treated him to 3 pennyworth of beer and water each time of payment. George Robinson of Eaton Socon – “There is a running account between Mr Brown and me and I want a straightforward settling. I never made any arrangement with Mr Brown about the £50 a year. I lent him £10.”
