Britain to return to Gt. Britain only" (i.e. compelling ships to land colonial products in Britain alone) p.25. Agreement for hiring a ship: Thomas Hyam of London, merchant, hires of J. Nicholson of London, woodmonger & others, the George, 300 tuns, master Thomas Clarke, to take 16-18 keels of coal (each keel containing 8 chaldrons) from Newcastle to Copenhagen, at price of £8 6s 8d per keel, plus 5 guineas primage …. p.38 Instructions by owner, Thomas Hyam, to James Jacob, master of the sloop Amity: roughly the plan is to take a load of corn to Lisbon, pick up a load of salt & take it to Rhode Island, take a loading of provisions at New York & take it to Jamaica, & bring back a fine freight, not sugar or cotton, but gold, pieces of eight elephants teeth, tortoiseshell, etc., the whole trip to take about 8 or 9 mouths. But the captain is allowed a great deal of discretion. Instructions by Thomas Hyam to Elisha Gibbs, master of the sloop Unity, to deliver logwood to Hamburg.
