- Scope and ContentEli Sturges: on 18 October he was with his father in a field in Sharnbrook in the occupation of Mr White. He saw a man dressed in a fustian coat taking potatoes from a cart standing at a distance in the same field. The potatoes belonged to his father and he told him what he had seen. William Sturges: after his son had spoken to him of the man, he saw the same man coming down the road toward where he was. He went to his cart and found upwards of a peck of potatoes had been taken. He went to the police constable who followed the prisoner with him. On searching the man they found upwards of a peck of potatoes in his pocket. They were jersey blues. PC William Green: he was advised by Sturges of the loss of the potatoes and went with him after the prisoner who was going into the Swan public house. He spoke to the prisoner and in the presence of Sturges, searched the prisoner’s pockets. He found upwards of a peck of potatoes which Sturges identified as his. Statement of the accused: he was very sorry for it.
