- Scope and ContentThe following headings are amongst others appear for most years: Bedford Depot Oil and Petrol stores Engineers laboratory Establishment Insurance premiums Items suspended (deferred expenditure) Loan repayments Mechanical surface dressing roads Private Street Works Act, 1892 Trunk Road Surveys Other headings are more occasional in character for instance: London -Yorkshire Motorway - Damage to County Roads (1960-1961) Traffic Censuses (1967 - 1968) The Ledger gives information on the wide range of the Highway Department's organisation and activities, from the list of equipment recorded annually under the heading of 'Insurance Premiums' to the heading of 'Establishment Charges'. After 1978 it appears only capital and maintenance costs of highways expenditure are recorded in the ledger, the last entries made in about 1980.
