- Scope and ContentThomas Morris of Westoning, blacksmith – on 19 Jan 1843 he missed some fork tines which had been hanging in his shop. He mentioned this to his man and then informed the police. He went with PC Scot to Greenfield in search of them and found the hay fork tines at Mr Burgess’s and the potato fork tines at Mr Thorngate Marden’s. They were taken by Supt Bates and are now produced. James Burgess – he keeps a beer shop at Greenfield in the parish of Pulloxhill. Eaton came to his house about the time Mr Morris lost his forks. Eaton brought the fork tines with him and said he had bought them to sell again from James Cain who had been a blacksmith at Steppingley. He gave Eaton 6d and a pint of beer for them. A few days later Morris came with the policeman. William Thorngate Marden – he resides with his aunt Jane Thorngate who keeps a public house at Flitton. On 15 January 1843 Eaton came to his aunt’s house and called for some beer. He had the tines of a potato fork in is hand and offered them for sale. Eaton said he had swapped some potatoes for them with Appleby, the blacksmith of Clophill. Eaton asked 15d and agreed to take 9d and some old iron, which he was to fetch another day. He has not seen Eaton since. A few days later Morris and PC Scott came. Morris identified the fork tines and they took them away. Edward Scott, Police Constable No.9 – from information received he went in search of Eaton. Eaton had absconded. He went with Morris to search for his property and was with him as described by the other witnesses. Eaton has been away since the robbery. He apprehended Eaton yesterday at Kinsman Green on his road to London. Eaton was driving Arnold’s wagon at the time. John Eaton – “I took them out of the shop one dinner time”.
