- Scope and ContentJoseph Brown: lived with his father, a farmer at Barton. On 29 August he saw Elizabeth Peck about 10am in a field called Hill Field in Barton, in the company of her father. Some of the wheat in the field was reaped and had partly been carried. Peck was picking up the wheat between the shocks. He did not see her take any from the shocks. He went to see her and asked her what she was doing. He told her to go away and she had 2 or 3 handfuls of wheat in her hands when she walked away. Statement of the accused: she had only 2 handfuls of wheat and begged pardon. She went again on Saturday night and begged pardon again. He said he would not forgive her.
