  • Scope and Content
Cawnpore December 19th 1861 My own Darling Katie, I must add a few lines to your dear Mama’s letter to thank you for the nice letter you last sent me. I think your writing is improved my dear, and the spelling is very god. I like so much to hear accounts of all you do. When this reaches you I am afraid your poor Miss [Emily] Easter will have left and you will both be very sorry to lose her. I intend writing to her in a few days. What a treat you have had dear Katie in your trip to the sea! How you must have enjoyed your games on the sands!! I don’t think I have anything now to tell you this month: except that a Mrs Clifford has given me a little white kitten which is a great favourite and a most amusing little cat in its way. Dear old Prae – I am glad to hear he is well, I should like to see him again. Next week will be Xmas and I shall think much of you all, and pray God to bless you, and so on to restore me to my house. Mama tells me that you are both grown – you don’t mean to say that you are still growing Katie dear? With Min it is all well enough – she is a little dumpey only yet and we will allow her to grow a bit. It will soon be birthday time again too. I declare and you must not forget to write and tell me how you have enjoyed yourselves and what presents you have received. I am writing in great haste as the postman is waiting. God bless you my darling Katie – accept your Papa’s most affectionate love. I need not I am sure repeat here advice to my eldest little daughter to be very diligent to be attentive to her studies for I know she will do this of her own good sense. Kiss little Min from her Paps – and wishing you both, and all at dear Flit, many happy Xmases. I am always your most affectionate father, John H Brooks.
