Eliza Bush Armstrong, wife of John Armstrong of Heath and Reach in the parish of Leighton Buzzard, labourer – the nightgown is the property of her daughter who is now living at Battlesden with her grandfather but makes her home at her [Eliza’s] house. She had washed it and hung it on a hedge to dry. About 10.30am she missed the nightgown and informed James Symonds who lives near her house. The nightgown is the one now produced. James Symonds of Heath and Reach, parish constable – from information received he went on the road towards Dunstable. At Hockliffe he gave information to PC Clough who went ahead. He saw Clough go towards the 3 prisoners who were sitting by the side of the road – this was in the parish of Tilsworth near the road leading out of the High Road to Bedwell. He went up to the prisoners and saw the nightgown. William Clough of Hockliffe, police constable – he went towards Dunstable and saw the 3 prisoners sitting by the road side and searched them. He found the nightgown in Flannagan’s pocket. It was quite wet. Charles Corbet – they were going towards London to look for work and saw a bundle under a hedge half a mile from any house. They all three went up to it and picked it up. John Higgs – says nothing William Flannagan – “I say the same as Corbet says”
