- Scope and ContentWilliam Thorngate Marden – he lives with his aunt Jane Thorngate who keeps a public house, the White Hart, at Flitton. Yesterday May 31 he went into the pantry and missed about 3½ lbs of bacon. He thought his aunt was boiling it for dinner. Before they sat down to dinner at 1pm his aunt missed the bacon and asked if he knew anything about it. He told her he thought she was boiling it. He then suspected the prisoner had stolen it because he met him near their house. He followed Clarke to his own house at Maulden and challenged him with stealing the bacon. Clarke’s wife said she knew where the bacon was and went out and fetched it. She told him afterwards that the bacon was in pawn at Wards beer shop and that she was obliged to take a coat to get it out. Clarke heard his wife say this and said he was very sorry. Edmund Clarke – he is very sorry. He took the bacon. He took it to Ward’s beer shop and had 3 pints of beer upon it. He owed them for 3 pints before. Mr Wald told him that would make all right.
