- Scope and ContentSamuel Oliver: a draper and on 16 or 17 May the prisoner came to his shop. She said she wanted some shawls for Mrs Hawkes in Church Street. He gave her 2, the price of one was 3s and the other 3s 6d. Camp took them away to show them to Mrs Hawkes. After about 5 minutes she brought them back and pointed out the one Mrs Hawkes would have, which was the 3s 6d one. She took the shawl away saying she would bring back the money. He served her himself. His private mark seemed to have been removed from the shawl. He did not sell the shawl to the prisoner. Mary Hawkes: wife of Thomas Hawkes and living in Church Street, Luton. The prisoner lived in her service and had left about 3 weeks before. She did not give Camp any orders to go for some shawls. William Powell: he took the prisoner into custody at Mrs Camp’s in Sandon, Hertfordshire on 29 May. He told her she was charged with obtaining the shawl under false pretences. At first she denied having it but afterwards went upstairs and fetched the shawl. She said she had bought it from Mr Oliver and had given 3 shillings for it. Statement of the accused: nothing to say.
