  • Scope and Content
William Linford: he lived with his father James, a baker, in Luton. On 8 December he was out with his father’s bread on a barrow and was standing at the top of St Ann’s Lane in Park Street. He saw the short prisoner go up to the barrow and take a loaf of bread. The prisoner then broke it into 2 pieces and gave a piece to the other prisoner. They began eating it directly. He asked them what they were doing and they said they were hungry. He told them they must pay for it and they said they had no money. He sent for the police and the men were taken into custody. PC Norman Snoxall: he took the 2 prisoners into custody . Chambers said he had taken the bread and spilt it in 2 and given a piece to the other prisoner. They had eaten it quickly as they had had nothing to eat for a day but a little boiled rice at St Albans union. Statements of the accused: nothing to say.
