- Scope and ContentOffences: did usually and constantly bow at name of Jesus; set up rails around the Communion table and commanded his parishioners to come to the said rails to receive the sacrement. once about 5 or 6 years since read the second service at the communion trable within the rails did not take down steps in chancel; read the declaration for liberty and sports; used opprobrious words against Parliament; had been taken up drunk; only read but did not explain or persuade people to take the National Covenant; has used part of the Common Prayer Book; used a bushel less than the standard 'Thomas Lankaster sayth that about 2 yeares since Mr Savage did severall times neglect the observation of the monthly fast appointed by the Parliamant, and that upon one of the said fast dayes, Mr Savage his servants were att worke ptching sheaves upon a wheat hovell, and Mr. savage was overseeing them' He father sayth that Mr Savage gave notice in Tilbrooks church to have a communion upon Christmas day the 25th December last, being a fast day 'Nicholas Newman sayth that Mr Savage was a troublesome man to his neighbours in the Comissaries Courts for tithes... William Shephard sayth that about 7 yeares since Mr. Savage did trouble him in the Comissaries Courts for tithes..' Thomas Lankaster sayth that Mr Savage did ofter preach against the Pharisees of the times, meaning (as this informant beleeve) such of his parishoners, as went to heare other men preach, and said they were like Dawes that did fly from steeple to steeple, saying they might well be wise in their owne eyes, for they were but fooles on othe mens eyes. Robert Edmunds saith farther 'that mr. Savage hath constantly sett out the tithe on his own person having sometimes no other tithe man and that he would sometimes tithe att sixe and sometimes at 7 sheaves fro his advantage' Anthony Weed saith that last harvest 'he had but sevven or eight cocks of barly upon one land, and that Mr. Savage did take the best of them for his tithe and never allowed him and recompence' Informants: Thomas Lancaster; John Allen; William Shepheard; Thurston Bridges, constable; William Bill late of Tilbrooke; James Hills; Nicholas Humphry; Simon Barnjam; Robert Shepheard; Nicholas Newman; Robert Edmundes; Anthony Weed.
