Scope and Content
reciting marriage articles 11 April 1685 of
a) Thomas Baines
b) John Burroughs and John Lilliott
before the marriage of Thomas Baynes and Mary Lilliott, by which a) covenanted to purchase freehold land of the yearly value of £50 to be settled to uses, i.e. to the use of a) for life, then to the use of Mary for life, then to the use of their joint heirs, in default to the right heirs of Thomas Baines. b) were to pay a) £850 as marriage portion. Proviso that if the lands to be sold to make up the £850 should come to above the estimate £400, then the surplus to be paid to Thomas Baines, or he could if he wished take the land itself at the estimate value.
and
reciting that John Lylliott was seized of divers messuages etc. in Stachden and Astwood and that Thomas Baynes has accepted the moiety of Mary in the said lands for £400 of the marriage portion
