(2) Letter from H H Gould, 39 Bridge Street, Banbury to James Pettit, dated 4 May 1879 - writing in response to hearing from Mr Hearn that Pettit wished to contact him. (3) Letter from James Pettit, 71 Borough High St, Southward, London, 7 May 1879 - asking for explanation of failure to account for payment made by Mr Hedges of Whaddon. (4) Letter from H H Gould, 39 Bridge Street, Banbury, dated 11 May 1879 - he was not aware he had not credited this amount and if sent details would remit it at once. (5) Letter from James Pettit, Leighton Buzzard, to H H Gould, dated 31 May 1879 - as he had had no reply to his last letter he would place the matter in the hands of his solicitor with instructions to prosecute unless a satisfactory explanation received by next Tuesday. (6) Letter from H H Gould, 57 Bridge Street, Banbury, 2 June 1879 - he is sorry to tell him he has not had the means to sent the amount to him yet, but he is coming to Aylesbury next Wednesday and will pay it then if he can. If not then he hopes Pettit will have the kindmess to wait a week or so. (7) Letter from James Pettit, Leighton Buzzard, 4 June 1879 - as he can get no satisfactory reply he has made up his mind to instruct his soliticor to prosecute. No steps will be taken until after Saturday so that he may have an opportunity to give an explanation inf he has one. (8) Letter from H H Gould, 57 Bridge Street, Banbury, 7 June 1879 - he is very sorry the mistake occurred and assures him it was not intentional. He remembers now that he had something over on his journey but did not remember who the person was who had paid him. He will remit the amount on Monday without fail as it would be the last thing he would think of doing. He is exceedingly sorry the mistae should have occured. (9) Letter from James Pettit, Leighton Buzzard, 20 June 1879 - unless he receives a more satisfactory explanation by Tuesday morning's post he will prosecute him for embezzlement. (10) Letter from H H Gould, 57 Bridge Street, Banbury, 23 June 1879 - he cannot see how to give a better explanation. He and Mr Burrows went to Dagnall to see someone respecting a 1/4 cask of rum. He then forgot the man's name. He cannot think how he omitted to put it down in the book but can assure him did not do it intentionally, it was an error on his part. If he will be kind enough to wait until Thursday next he will sent him the amount. He would have sent it before if he had it, but has been doing nothing since he left his employ and finds it very had to get along at all. He has been seeing about the sherry cask from Bennett in Banbury to send to him, as Bennett is a bankrupt and wehn Mr Hearn was here last he asked him to see to it for him. (11) Letter from H H Gould, 57 Bridge Street, Banbury, to Mr Pettit, 7 July 1879 - having received a summons on Saturday to appear at Leighton on Tuesday respecting the £2 3s he failed to account for in error, he hopes he will let it stand for a week as he does not have the money to pay the railway fare. He will borrow the amount and send it to him without fail with expenses. It was a mistake on his part and if he had the money he would have sent it.
