- Scope and ContentHerbert Manning of Adelaide Street, Luton, manufacturer – on 10 May 1879 he remembers laying his cigar holder on the window sill in his blockhouse. Manning was visiting his house on that day. He did not miss the cigar holder until he was asked about it by the police on the night of the 16th May. The next morning he accompanied PC Robinson to Mr Butcher’s pawnshop where a cigar holder he identified as his property was shown to him. It is worth 10s. John Seymour of Bute Street, Luton – he is an assistant to Mr Butcher, pawnbroker of Luton. On Monday 12 May Manning pledged the cigar holder now produced. He advanced Gardener 1s 6d. Gardner said he had bought it from London with him. Frederick Robinson of Luton, police constable – on Friday 16 May Gardener was in his custody on another charge. On searching him he found the duplicate which he now produces. On the morning of the 17th from information received he charged Gardner with stealing the cigar holder Gardner said “I did not steal it. I bought it off a man on the road.” William Manning – he is not guilty.
