Reuben Kilby: gardener to Mr Hornby of Nether Crawley. It was part of his duty to see to his master’s fowls. On 12 March he saw some of the fowls were in the henhouse and some in the shed. The following morning he missed at least 12. He could swear to two fowls produced. The light one had been in the henhouse and the dark one in the shed. Joseph Wingrave: about 10.15pm on 12 March he went to the King Henry public house. Green was in there with 2 fowls in a bag asking who would buy them. Wingrave asked to look at them and asked if they were Green’s own. Green said they were his and he had more at home. He paid Green 3 shillings and a pint of beer for them. PC Frederick Barrett: he was informed of the missing fowls on 13 March. He got the fowls description and visited Wingrave’s house and saw two fowls which answered the description of the missing ones. An attempt had been made to wring the dark ones neck. He took them in his possession and apprehended Green on suspicion of stealing them. Green said they were his own. On searching Green’s house he found others but they did not answer the descriptions given. Statement of the accused: the fowls were his own property.
