  • Scope and Content
Has received letter from his sister Alice to say that sister [in law] Agnes is very sickly, so encloses letter of attorney to correspondent’s brother William Lawrence to collect money, and also to claim the moiety of a farm that on death of brother Henry without an heir should have come to writer by the will of their father. It was given to Henry and his wife by way of settlement on their marriage, and in default of issue, to Geoffrey, Nicholas and John. Geoffrey sold farm without consent of writer or John. Writer will do what he can about it when he gets home. The farm is about 2 or 3 miles from Shefford. There is also 30 acres land in possession of cousin Robert Lawrence, who lives at Stondon, which was given to writer and which is mortgaged for [?] £30 which he would like redeemed. He knows that his brother John and wife are poor, and that the wife has kept 2 of writer’s three children for these 3 years, but considers that he left sufficient property in his house, and has sent sufficient trade goods to cover the cost. He set out for Taradanty on 13 May 1586, and had 100 odd miles to go by foot, and took 2 months 20 days to get to the country. Tells his wishes about the children. Asks correspondent to tell cousin Travill that her husband is very ill.
