- Scope and ContentWilliam Seabrook of Bedford, sergeant in the Bedfordshire Militia – on 9 January about 7pm he was at the Fountain Inn, Luton. Conquest and Andrews came in together. Andrews said “Sergeant, I have brought you a recruit”. He asked what his name was and if Andrews knew him. Andrews said his name was Frederick Cook. He has found out the recruit’s name is Conquest and not Cook, and that Conquest had served in the 16th Regiment of Foot. He could not therefore enlist him as a militiaman. Conquest was sworn in by J. Higgins Esquire, JP for the Borough of Luton and was asked all the questions stated on the attestation marked “A”. Conquest has been discharged from the army. The attestation has Conquest’s mark made in his presence when he signed as Frederick Cook. Conquest also gave a false address. After Conquest answered the questions he gave him 1s. He would not have given him the 10s if he had not declared that he had never served in the army. Andrews was present when the replies were made to him. He gave Andrews 5s. If he had known Conquest had been in the army he would have enquired whether he had been discharged with good conduct or what. He produces a record of Conquest’s service marked “B”. He would not have given Andrews the 5s if he had known Conquest had served before. [Cross-examined] Andrews was present when he read all the questions to Conquest and knew the answers were false. Charles Haines of Luton, police constable – he apprehended Conquest and Andrews on 24 January. A Mr Knight drove them to the station. Neither made any reply when the charges were read to them. Frederick Conquest – he has nothing to say. John Andrews – “I did not know but what his name was Cook”
