- Scope and ContentCharles Frederick Morris of North Street, Leighton Buzzard, draper and clothier – he believes the cord waistcoat now produced is his property. He has others of the same description. Francis Morris – he is a draper’s assistant employed by his brother, the prosecutor. He lives with his brother. On 16 December he had charge of the shop. In the evening he missed a cord waistcoat from among other things hanging outside the shop window. He believes the one produced is the one he missed. Frederick Smith – he lives with his father at Leighton and is in his 15th year. On Monday 16 December he took the waistcoat produced from Mr Morris’s shop. It was hanging outside the window. He kept it for a week or two and then gave it to William Rolls. He exchanged it for a coat he now has on. William Rolls – he lives at Heath and Reach with his father, the prisoner. He is in his 17th year. He received the waistcoat from Frederick Smith on Christmas Day. He gave Smith a coat for it. He wore the waistcoat for 3 days then took it home. He gave it to his father and told his father to sell it if he could. Walter Weston of Heath and Reach, labourer – he purchased the waistcoat 5 weeks ago from John Rolls. He gave 4/6 for it and a quart of beer. Rolls did not say where he obtained it from. Charles Plowman, police constable stationed at Leighton Buzzard – on 30 January 1879 he went to Weston’s house and received the waistcoat from him. John Rolls – he has nothing to say.
