    John Read of Leighton Buzzard, shoemaker – his shop is in Leck Street. On 10 December he had some boots standing on a board outside his shop window. About 11.30am he missed a pair of boots and gave information to the police. The pair produced are the ones he lost. He knows them by the mark. Charles Plowman, police constable stationed at Leighton Buzzard – on Wednesday 22 January Baines was at the police station wearing the boots now produced. He asked Baines where he got them. Baines said he bought them of “Wilsons”. Rolls was present. He took the boots to Mr Read who said they were his. He charged Baines with stealing them. Baines said he had bought them from Rolls (who was then standing by) for 4s and a throat wrapper. Baines admitted he knew they were stolen when he bought them. Rolls did not say anything. [Cross-examined] He does not recollect Baines saying he also gave Rolls a pair of shoes for the boots. William Rolls and Thomas Baines - have nothing to say
