- Scope and ContentGeorge Toyer: he had a workshop at the back of Tavistock Street. On 10 November he missed some tools. He had seen them safe at 12 noon and missed them at 6.30pm. He missed 5 planes, 2 chisels, a gauge, 3 plough irons and a screw driver. He valued them at 16 shillings. He advised the police and later that evening found the 5 planes lying outside the shop on his own premises. That was at 9.30pm and they had not been there at 6.30pm. He was the rest the next day at the police office. Frederick Fisher: he had seen the prisoner in Bute Street with something in a bag. They asked him to go into the pawn shop for a shilling. Both prisoners asked him. Garner was carrying the bag and said it contained planes. He did not go to the pawn shop. Charles Smith: he received information regarding the loss of Toyer’s tools. He found 2 chisels and a gauge at the house of a man named Hardwick and 3 irons in the roadway in Dumfries Street. A lad gave him the screwdriver. He apprehended Garner at Hardwick’s house. Pedder was arrested at his mother’s at 12 New Street. They were charged together. Pedder said they had taken the tools back and had thrown the sack away at the bottom of the street where Hardwick lived. Garner agreed with this statement. Statements of the accused: nothing to say.
