  • Scope and Content
Joseph Perkins: a manufacturer residing at 87 Guildford Street, Luton. On Saturday 2 July, he locked his premises about 5pm and the iron was left in the blocking room, which was locked. The blocking room was part of the dwelling premises. On Monday morning he found the iron gone. He examined the place and found boot marks on the windowsill. He was later able to identify the iron when it was present to him. Frederick Pearson: he worked for Pearson as a blocker. He was able to identify the iron as the property of Perkins and as being the one he had used for 9 or 10 months. He left it in the blocking room on Saturday and missed it on the Monday. He identified the iron at Gales’ pawnshop. Sidney Harris: a pawnbroker’s assistant at Gales in High Farm Road, Luton. On Monday the 4th about 8.30am the prisoner Toyer brought the iron into the shop and pledged it for 3s 6d. Toyer said it was his and pawned it in his own name. Detective William Chamberlain: having received information regarding the robbery, he examined the premise and found boot marks on both window sill and sash window. He made enquiries and found the iron pledged at Gale’s by Toyer. He found Toyer on 6th July and went to arrest him about 11pm but he got away at the back and ran away. He found him hidden under currant trees in another garden. He took him into custody and later apprehended Milemore. They were charged together. Toyer said “we were both together”. Milemore said “you are a liar I know nothing about it”, to which Toyer responded Milemore had taken the iron and given him it to pawn. Statement of the accused: nothing to say.
