    Amelia Underwood of 48 Chapel Street, wife of William Underwood, boot and shoe maker – on Saturday 1 June between 6 and 6.30 Morton came to her shop and she showed her some boots. Morton selected 3 pairs and asked if she would allow her to take them for her sister to try. She agreed and asked how long Morton wanted them. Morton said 20 minutes. Morton gave the name and address of Allen in Dumfries Street. She believed Morton as her husband had a customer of that name in Dumfries Street. Morton did not bring the boots back and she did not see her again until she was in custody. Martha Underwood of Chapel Street – she is a single woman and lives with her brother William Underwood. On Saturday 1stJune between 6.15 and 6.30 Morton came to her shop and asked to look at some boots to take to fit on her sister. Mrs Underwood showed her 3 pairs and she said she would return them in 20 minutes. Morton said her name was Allen and she lived in Dumfries Street. Joseph Butcher of Bute Street, pawnbroker – on Tuesday 11 June Morton brought a pair of boots to be pawned. They were pledged for 2s 6d. She said they were hers. Charles Haines, police constable for the borough of Luton. On 12 June he apprehended Morton on a warrant at Markyate Street. She denied having any boots. He later went to the police station with Mrs Underwood and she then said she did have them, pawned 2 pairs and gave the other to her sister. The pair produced is the only pair he can find.
