  • Scope and Content
To the Overseers of the Poor of Stevington. This is to give you notice that we the churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the parish of Worth in the County of Sussex do intend at the next General Quarter Sessions of the Peace to be holden in and for the said County of Bedford, to commence, prosecute and try an appeal against an Order of Thomas Charles Higgins Esq and Frederich C G Passy Esq, two of the justices of the Peace for the said County of Bedford dated 1st March instant, for and concerning the removal of hannah roake, widow and her five children from the said parish of Stevington to the said parish of Worth. The grounds of such an appeal are as follows: There was no Complaint made by the Overseers of the Poor of Stevington as stated in the said Order nor any complaint made by them that the paupers had come to inhabit or were chargeable to the last mentioned parish at the time of or within a reasonable time before the making of the said order for 12 days previously thereto. That the order was not made within a reasonable time after due complaint. That the examinations appear to have been taken on different days without any proper adjournment of the complaint or the hearing thereof nor do all the examinations appear to have been taken at the hearing of the same complaint. There is no sufficient evidence of Chargeability. That the examinationson which the order was made do not sufficiently state or shew that Richar Roake the husband of the pauper wa hired for a year by Captain Dixie. Signed John Frank, James Hudson (Churchwardens) and John Brooks
