- Scope and ContentSettlement Examination of Phoebe Betts: I am the wife of Eli Betts late of Yielden in the County of Bedford, labourer, to whom I was married in the month of August 1840 at the parish church of Odell in the County of Bedford. My husband ran away from me and my family at Yielden a month ago last Saturday, and I have not seen him since. I have three children born in matrimony by my said husband namely Joseph aged 5 years, Elizabeth aged theree years and Charles aged one year, of whom the eldest Joseph is now living with my husband's friends at Knotting in this County. I and my youngest children are now chargeable to and maintained by the parish of Yielden in the workhouse of the Bedford Union. The person, Eli Betts,Phoebe his wife and their two children Joseph and Elizabeth mentioned in the Order of removal produced by Mr Wing, are myself, my husband and our two eldest children. Shortly after the date of that order we were removed to Higham Ferrers by the Overseers of Yielden, and delivered over to the Overseers of Higham Ferrers. I and my said two children Elizabeth Betts and Charles Betts are the persons mentioned in the Certificate of Chargeablity now produced. Memorandum that on 25th September 1846 Eli Betts, Phoebe his wife and their two children were delivered to Higham Ferrers and John Sanders, Overseer, received them. W B Graham.
