Signed William Shove Chalk, Chairman and Samuel Wing , Clerk. Settlement examination of John Sears at present residing in the workhouse of the Bedford Union: I am 49 years of age. At Leighton Buzzard Statute (which is held a few days after Old Michaelmas Day) in the year 1822 being an unmarried person without child or children I was hired into the township of Leighton Buzzard in the County of Bedford by Mr William Sanders, innkeeper as his Ostler, no time was mentioned for my service. I was to have what I could get in my situation, and he agreed to give me board and lodging. Mr Sanders kept the George Inn at Leighton Buzzard, and when he hired me gave me a shilling earnest money. I enetered Mr Sanders Service as agreed upon on the day after the said statute and continued and abided in the same service for a whole year and upwards, viz, with Mr Sanders to the time of his death in the month of January 1823. And with his daughter Sophia Sanders who carried on the business at the said Inn from the time of her fathers death until within a week or two of Old Michaelmas 1824. During the whole period of the said service I resided in the said township of Leighton Buzzard in the said County of Bedford. I am now an inmate of the workhouse of the bedford union previous to which I was residing and inhabiting in the parish of Bolnhurst in the County of Bedford. I am the person mentioned in the Certificate of Chargeability now produced by Samuel Wing. Memorandum that copies of the above papers were delivered to the Overseers of Leighton Buzzard 16th Feb 1846.
