  • Scope and Content
Thomas Henry Fisher – he is an assistant of Mr Emery, grocer of Dunstable He has seen Thorn 2 or 3 times in Mr Emery’s shop. He came there on 27 November between 6 and 7pm and asked for a packet of cocoa and half a pound of small biscuits for Mrs Higgs. The price of them was 8d and 3d. He knows Mrs Higgs as one of Mr Emery’s customers. She is the wife of Mr Higgs the builder. He let Thorn have the goods and charged them to Mrs Higgs’ account. Thorn said a twopenny packet of cocoa would do but he thought Mrs Higgs would like an eightpenny packet as that was what she usually had. Matthew Willison Baker – he is an assistant at Mr Emery’s shop. On 30 November at 9.15 Thorn came to the shop and asked for 1lb of lunch biscuits for Mr Higgs. He served him with them and as he was about to leave the shop asked Thorn if he had brought Mr Higgs’ book. Thorn said he did not think they sent it. He then asked Thorn to go into the sitting room with him and sent for Mr and Mrs Higgs. They both came. Mr Higgs went to try to find Thorn’s father and brought the police superintendent. The price of the biscuits was 3d. He had not put them into any account but had given them to Thorn. Frances Higgs, wife of Mr William Higgs, builder of Dunstable – she knows Thorn as a neighbour’s child. Thorn has never been in her husband’s employ. She has once or twice, more than 6 months ago, sent him on errands. She is not aware she has ever sent him to Mr Emery’s and is certain she did not send him on 27th and 30th November. She has never authorised to Thorn to use her name or that of Mr Higgs, or received any goods fetched by him. William Higgs – Thorn has never been in his employ and he has never authorised Thorn to fetch any goods for him. Richard Thorn – has nothing to say.
