Producer of malt extract. Founded in 1921 by Munton Baker-Munton as Munton & Baker (Bedford) Ltd on the site of the old Phoenix brewery, Bedford, and renamed Muntona in 1923. Acquired Edward Fison Ltd of Ipswich, Suffolk in 1935. Expanded to larger site at Stowmarket, Suffolk in 1948. Muntona and Edward Fison Ltd amalgamated in 1958 to form Munton & Fison Ltd. The Ipswich premises were sold 1956 and the Bedford site was closed and sold 1959. In 1964 the company formed a joint venture with two Scottish distillery companies and began production at a new site at Bridlington, Yorkshire. In the 1970s the company expanded its site at Stowmarket and began production of home brewing kits. Further diversification and acquisitions followed. The company was renamed Muntons PLC in 1996. The majority of the company's records are held at Suffolk Record Office, reference HC466.
