Examination of Elizabeth Hodges of St Paul, Bedford: I am the widow of John Hodges who died at Christmas 1826. My husband was residing at the parish of Oakley in the County of Bedford at the time of his decease, in which parish I continued to reside until the month of June 1828 when I became chargeable to the said parish of Oakley and was removed by an Order of John Higgins Esquire and Vere Alston, Clerk, two Justices of the Peace for the County of Bedford with my daughter Frances then 22 years of age from the said parish of Oakley to the parish of Luffwick or Lowick in the County of Northampton as the place of my husbands legal settlement. A few days after the order was made we were removed by Mr Francis Hilton deceased then one of the Overseers of the Parish of Oakley to the said parish of Luffwick or Lowick and were delivered to the overseer of the Poor there who received and provided for us. The said Order was never appealed against to my knowledge. A short time after this removal (about two days) the Overseers of Luffwick or Lowick agreed that I should return to Oakley with my daughter And they would allow me one shilling and sixpence per week and would also pay my expenses of conveyance back to Oakley. I agreed to this and accordingly returned and resided in the said parish of Oakley and for the space of about three years from the month of July 1828 I was regularly relieved by the Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of Luffwick or Lowick with one shilling and sixpence per week although I was residing in the sand parish of Oakley during the whole period of being so relieved.. I have done no act to my knowledge to gain a settlement except in the parish of Luffwick or Lowick aforesaid. I am now residing and inhabiting in the parish of St Paul in the Borough of Bedford and am the person and am the person mentioned in the Certificate of Chargeability now produced. Examination of Samuel Wing of the parish of St Peter, Bedford, gentleman: On Tuesday 17th December instant with the permission of the Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Oakley in the County Of Bedford I made diligent and careful search in the parish chests in the Church of the said parish for any order or duplicate of an order for the removal of Elizabeth Hodges widow from the said parish of Oakley tp the parish of Luffwick or Lowick in teh County of Northampton but could not find the same or any of them. Examination of John Hilton one of the Overseers of the poor of the Parish of Oakley touching the place of the last legal settlement of Elizabeth Hodges, widow: Iam one of the Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Oakley. The books and documents belonging to the parish are kept in the chests in the parish church. My father Francis Hilton now deceased was one of the Overseers of the Poor of the saind parish from Lady Day 1828 to Lady Day 1829. I am one of his executors under his last will and testament. I have made diligent and careful search amongst the papers belonging to him in my possession but I cannot find an dorder or duplicate order for the removal of Elizabeth Hodges, widow, from the said parish of Oakley to the parish of Luffwick or Lowick in the County of Northampton. I produce the book of expenditures from the poor rates of the parsih of Oakley for the year 1828 duly allowed by two Justices of the Peace for the County of Bedford on 3rd April 1829 in which I find the following entries: 1828 June 21 Expenses of going to Olney concerning Mrs Hodges 4/-; Going to Turvey with Mrs Hodges 4/6, Paid for the Order 8/6, Taking Mrs Hodges to Lowick 11/-.
