Settlement examination of Joseph Paris, at present residing atWinchcomb, County of Gloucester, labourer: I was born at Carlton in Bedfordshire and am now 44 years of age. Twenty two years ago come Christmas next I entered into the occupation of a house, shop and premises in the village and parish of Chellington in Bedfordshire as a yearly tenant thereof to Rowland Alston Esquire at the rent of six pounds a year. I occupied these preises until June 1826 and was rated to and paid the poor and other rates in respect thereof. At or about Christmas 1823 I purchased these premises of Mr Alston at the price of £120 and paid the whole purchase money for them and thenceforth continued in occupation and residence thereupon as absolue owner thereof until the summer of 1825 when I sold them to Mr Coleman of Bedford at the sum of £220 but continued in occupation f them until June in the following year. I have never done any act since whereby to my knowledge or belief I could acquire a settlement. I was married 17 years ago last March (being then a widower) to Hannah Smith (my now wife) by whom I have three children now living Wiliam 17 years old now out at service, Anne 6 years old and Sarah one year old. being very unwell and unable to work I have become wholly destitute and am with my said wife and 2 youngest children actually chargeable to the said parish of Winchcomb. Copy certificate of Chargeability issued by the Board of Guardians of the poor of Winchcomb stating that Joseph Paris, Hannah his wife and their two children Anne 6 years old and Sarah 1 year old became chargeable to the parish on 7th December 1844.
