Removal order for Elizabeth Burt, widow. Removed from St Leonard. Shoreditch to St Paul, Bedford. Examination of Elizabeth Burt, now residing in Shoreditch Workhouse: I am about 75 years of age and am now residing in the workhouse in the parish of St Leonard, Shoreditch, which is situate in Kingsland Road in the said parish. I was married to my late husband Thomas Burt in the parish church at Blunham in Bedfordshire about 58 years ago. About 30 years ago my husband took of a Mr Attlebury a tenement consisting of a dwelling house and shop included (which housed his trade as a tailor) situate near the bridge in the High Street in the parish of St Paul, Bedford., which said tenement, then of the annual value of ten pounds and upwards, my said husband agreed to pay sixteen pounds a year for the same. He rented the said house and resided therein and paid the aforesaid rent forty days and upwards, that is to say about 10 years, and he was charged with and paid his share towards the public taxes or levies of the said parish of St Paul, Bedford in respect of such house as aforesaid. He did not afterwards do any act to my knowledge to gain another settlement and died in the summer of 1822. I have not since his death been married or done any act to my knowledge to gain another settlement. I am now in distree and maintained at the workhouse of the parish of St Leonard, Shoreditch, and the cost of such maintenance is a charge a charge on the funds raised by rates for the relief of the poor of the said parish. About the summer of 1841 Sophia Burt the widow of my son Robert Burt and their three children Lucy, Frederick, and Walter were passed from the parish of Lambeth in the County of Surrey to the said parish of St Paul, Bedford on a settlement devised by my said son from my said hisband, renting, occupying and residing in the house of Mr Attlebury in the High Street of St Paul, Bedford, ans she was relieved by the officers and there was not any appeal against such. Examination of John Coste: I am the Relieving Officer of the said parish of St Leonard, Shoreditch and appointed by the trustees of the poor of that parish for the purpose of relieving the poor therein. The said Elizabeth Burt, mentioned in the accompanying examination and annexed order of removal, is one of such poor and now chargeable to the said parish of St Leonard, SHoreditch. She was admitted to the workhouse 22nd July 1844 and has been ever since, and now is maintained therein, and the cost of her maintenance has been, and is now a charge on the finds raised by the rates. Second copy of removal order.
