  • Scope and Content
William Inwards of Dunstable – he is clerk to Mr Southam of Dunstable, auctioneer. On 23 August 1876 Mr Southam had a stock sale at Dunstable. Alfred Snoxall purchased Lot 39 a heifer for £14 17s 6d and Lot 40 a steer for £17 2s 6d. When Snoxall applied for delivery tickets he said they were for a Mr Wilson. The stock was delivered to Snoxall in Wilson’s name. [Cross-examined] Snoxall had bought once or twice before in Wilson’s name and Wilson paid. He did not deliver the stock. He knows who did. He made out the ticket and gave it to Snoxall. Mr Southam would not have trusted Snoxall, who had bought before but not in his own name. If a ticket has Wilson’s name it would only be delivered to his representatives. George Wilson of Lilley, farmer – on 23 August 1876 he never authorised Snoxall to purchase anything for him. He had no general order at any time to buy on his account. He never received the heifers Snoxall bought. He was applied to for payment for them the next week. He replied that he had not bought any nor authorised Snoxall to buy. [Cross-examined] He has never authorised Snoxall to buy for him at Dunstable, but Snoxall used to buy one ox for him at Luton each week at Mr Cumberland’s. John Woods of Luton – he is a drover and lives at New Town Street, Luton. He works for Mr Southam and attends to the stock. He remembers Snoxall coming in August 1876 for 2 bullocks for Mr Wilson. Snoxall produced the ticket and took them away. [Cross-examined] He has had 2 or 3 before in Wilson’s name. When the tickets come he delivers. Alfred Snoxall – he has nothing to say.
