  • Scope and Content
James Knight of Dunstable, dealer – he lives in South Street, Dunstable. On Friday 12 October he had 2 handsaws in his barn. He missed one of them the next morning. He identifies the saw now produced by the police as his. He identifies it by the tip of the handle being gone. It is worth 2s 6d. Champkin had often been on his premises and knew where he kept his tools. Noah Parrott of Caddington, labourer – he sold the saw to Knight and has sharpened it for him about every 3 weeks since. [Cross-examined] He never had a saw by the same maker before. William Cutler of Kensworth, labourer – on 13 October at 6.30 he was working for Mr Morton at his farm when Champkin came to him in the stable, said “look what I found this morning” and showed him a saw. Champkin offered it to him for 1s 6d. He said he did not mind having it if Champkin came by it honest. He paid Champkin for it in the afternoon. He gave it up to the police on 22 October. William Addington, police sergeant – he received the saw from Cutler. Arthur Champkin – he has nothing to say.
