    63 This writing on this piece of parchment is very faint and difficult to read. The bottom left-hand side of the document has been torn off. Richard Wylcokys Who say on their oath that the Prior of Newnham iiijd [4d], Geoffrey Luke ijd [2d], Joan Howe jd [1d], John Bliner’ jd [1d], John Wylscher jd [1d] , John Oaky(?) jd [1d] owed suit of Court and made default. Therefore they are amerced. Also they present that Relright Baker ijd [2d] and George Baker ijd [2d] of Bedford are common bakers and broke the assize. Therefore they are amerced. Also they present that Alicia Parker ijd [2d] and Alicia Johnson ijd [2d] were Brewers and sellers of ale against the assize. Therefore they are amerced. Also they present that John Heward orders [that] Richard Pecke, William Spenser servant of Thomas Myton, William Feyre servant John Warner have xij [12] years or more and have not sworn service to the lord King. Therefore the bailiff was ordered [torn edge] a plea a day at the next court under a penalty for each of them of xijd.[12d] [The next passage is extremely faint and difficult to read. What follows was read unde ultra-violet light, but even so the accuracy of the transcription cannot be guaranteed.] It is ordered that all the tenants who [illegible] will well and faithfully repair their roofs in roofing [torn edge and very faint ink in this passage] and timber before the next court under a penalty for each offence of xs [10s]. [torn edge] one building called Asiabyll and one building called Acres house lately in the holding called Paternoster. [torn edge] Thomas Myton is fallen down and totally devastated and the lord does not know whose fault [it is?} [torn edge] from the agreement of all the tenants that no tenant of demesne land should keep further lands [torn edge] ….. acres of land in the Fallow Field on the fields of the common, under a penalty for each offence of xxs [20s] [torn edge] Court came Robert Cooper and took from the lord one Cottage lately in the holding of Thomas Vyner and [torn edge] pertaining to the same Cottage with two tofts and eighteen acres of land and a half and six roods of meadow with each one torn edge]..messuage in which William Yarwey lives and another toft lying next to [torn edge].. which Richard Wythaker lives, to have and to hold the aforesaid Cottage and tofts with lands and [torn edge].. Cowper and his assigns, at the will of the lord, according to the custom of the manor, rendering to the lord [torn edge] cottage and six acres of land vijs [7s]. And the value of two tofts and eighteen acres of land and separate meadowland in Bedford [torn edge] [illegible] xvjs xd [16s 10d] a year at the usual terms there and suit of court. And the same Robert the aforesaid cottage [torn edge] will sufficiently repair and maintain at his own expense and [illegible] timber, withies and laths [torn edge] should deliver under the lord’s supervision for the time being. And he gave to the lord iiijs [4s] as fine and made fealty etc. [torn edge] Court came Edmund Carter and surrendered one messuage and ten acres ….. into the hand of the lord [torn edge] …. Pertaining to the same messuage lately in the holding of William Dyrche for the use of Robert Icheson [illegible] with the pledge of [torn edge] granted to the same Robert Johnson, to hold by himself and by his assigns at the will of the lord according to the custom [of the manor] [torn edge] rendering to the lord annually xs [10s] at the usual terms there and Suit of Court. And the said Robert Johnson [torn edge] will repair, sustain and maintain at his own expense. And he will have from the lord timber, withies and [torn edge] as and when becomes necessary for delivering [illegible] for the time being.
