- Scope and ContentThomas Coates Johnson – he is an innkeeper and keeps the Plait Hall Hotel, Cheapside, Luton. On Monday 11 December 1876 between 4 and 5pm he sent Lees to the bank with £10 18s 4d to obtain a bankers draft. Lees never came back with the draft and he has not seen him since. Thomas Williams – he is the cashier at the London and County Bank, Luton. In the afternoon of Monday 11 December 1876 Henry Lees never came to the bank for Mr Johnson, and has not been since that day. Joseph Wright, police sergeant for Luton – he received a warrant for the arrest of Lees on 12 December 1876. He was not able to find him until 24th April when he heard Lees was at Wakefield. He went to Wakefield and charged him with stealing the money. Lees said “Yes, I am sorry for it. I took the money to the Bank and tried the door but it was shut up or I should have left it there. I made an appointment to meet a woman at Dunstable. I started to Dunstable and met her and then went to Oxford – stayed there all night and then went to Birmingham dog show”. Henry Lees – “I am sorry for what I have done”
