  • Scope and Content
Henry Breed of Waterloo Farm, Everton, farmer – on Wednesday 31 January he was told 2 eggs had been missed out of a nest in the onion loft [deleted]. He went to the cart hovel under the loft and searched and found 2 eggs hidden under some guano bags. He left them there. About 3.20pm he went back to the cart hovel and the eggs were still there. He got up into the onion loft and laid down to watch the place. Some men including John Gilbert came into the cart hovel and put up their carts and shut out the horses. Gilbert stopped behind the other men and listened until he heard them go into the stable. Gilbert picked up the eggs and put them in his right hand jacket pocket and walked away. He came down from the loft and called to Gilbert “don’t take them away”. Gilbert stopped and said “what sir, I have got nothing”. He told Gilbert he had two eggs. Gilbert pulled them out of his pocket and said he could have them. He said they were nothing to do with him – they belonged to his wife. Gilbert then went in the direction of the house. On Thursday he told Gilbert he should not want him after Saturday. Gilbert said “I’m very sorry master I should have been so silly to take them eggs. I hope you’ll forgive me”. He told Gilbert his wife had missed a great many lately and he must see her. John Gilbert – has nothing to say except that he told him he was going to take them into the house.
