    Roll 24 Welyngton Court of John Mowbray, Earl of Nottingham and Marshall of England held there on Thursday next before the feast of Saint George the Martyr [23rd April] in the sixth year of the reign of Henry 5th, after the conquest. [21st April 1418] Bekyngham Essoins William Wryght the younger of the community by John Crane Sworn men John Myton Thomas Tele William Wryght the elder John Gaubriel Robert Partrych Thomas Stoughton John Treket John Bande the elder William Starlyng John Yarwey John Bande the younger William Tayllour Grant heriot one pig valued at ijs iiijd [2s 4d] Premium xd [10d] fealty They present that Peter Bucher, who held one Messuage and half a virgate of land from the lord, according to the custom of the manor and also rendering to the lord xiijs iiijd [13s 4d] a year, closed his existence after the day of the last court. After whose death a new heriot of one pig valued at ijs iiijd [2s 4d] fell due to the lord. The bailiff is answerable. And afterwards Joan wife of the said Thomas [sic] did not come to this court to claim the said holding, according to the custom of the manor. Therefore it was seised into the hand of the lord. And on this Thomas Smyth came and took the said holding from the lord. To be held by the same Thomas for the term of his life according to the custom of the manor, Rendering and making therefrom to the lord annually just as the aforesaid Peter customarily rendered and made. And the said Thomas will well and completely sustain, repair and put right all the buildings and pertinences of the said messuage at his own expense. He will have timber from the lord to repair the buildings within the aforesaid Messuage as is necessary. And the same Thomas will neither sub-let the said holding nor let any of it without permission from the lord. And he gave xd [10d] to the lord as premium and made fealty. Holding in the hand of the lord Also they present that Anna Starlyng who held one Messuage and half a virgate of land from the lord, according to the custom of the manor, closed her existence after the day of the last Court. And the said holding remained in the lord’s hand because of no tenant. Profit of the Manor ijs iiijd [2s 4d] William Cook is answerable Also they present that Master William Cook has sold one hedge next to the Crascroft to a certain Thomas Stoughton for ijs iiijd [2s 4d] owed by the said William at the end of the account. Penalty Also they present that John Bande has ij [2] trees for repairs mended to his building, Richard Baudewene vj [6] [illegible ]….. to repair his ['buildings' deleted] grange. And it was ordered that the aforesaid John should put his timber in the repairs of his building before the feast of St. Martin [probably July 4th] under a penalty of vjs viijd [6s 8d] and the said Richard is under a penalty of xls [40s] Defective buildings penalty And that John Yarwey has one ruined and defective Messuage, lately belonging to Henry Yarwey. And he was ordered to put it right before the aforesaid feast under a penalty of xls [40s]. And that Robert Akerman has one Insethouse not repaired, or not fully repaired, and William Wryght the elder [has] one malt kiln not repaired as he was ordered the same. Therefore they were ordered to put them right before the feast of Saint Martin next in the future [11th November 1418] under a penalty for each of xls [40s]. Pledges for sustaining buildings To this Court came Joan Rydere and provided a pledge for the holding, which she has according to the custom after the death of Thomas Rydere, her husband, to hold and sustain the holding the same as a tenant at will, that is to say from Robert Myton and John Myton Pledges for sustaining buildings Also to this court came Joan Yarwey, lately the wife of Henry Yarwey, and provided pledges, that is to say from John Gostwyk and Richard Lygtfot for repairing and sustaining her buildings, which she has after the death of the aforesaid Henry her husband. Assessors of fines John Myton, John Gaubryl Sum iijs ijd [3s 2d] the sale of one hedge from a certain William Cook, valued at ijs iiijd [2s 4d] shown in his account.
