    Roll 23 Welyngton View of Frankpledge with Court of John Mowbray, Earl of Nottingham and Marshall of England held there on the Wednesday next before the feast of St. Dennis [9th October] in the fifth year of the reign of Henry the fifth, after the conquest [Wednesday 6th October 1417] Bekyngham [No record of essoins] Sworn men John Myton Thomas Tele John Bande the elder John Gabryel John Palmere William Wryght the elder John Treket Robert Partrych John Rydere the elder John Yarwey John Bande the younger John Rydere the younger Common fine xijs [12s] They present that they give xijs [12s] as common fine on this day. And that the Prior of Newnham made default and therefore was in mercy. Strays ij [2] swarms of bees valued at xiiijd [14d] And they present that j [1] swarm of bees valued at viijd [8d] came into the lord’s demesne about the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist [24th June] and no-one came [to claim them] so they were sold to John Gabryel, the bailiff is answerable. And that another one swarm of bees valued at vjd [6d] came into the lord’s demesne about the aforesaid feast. And the said swarm [is] in hand [blank]. Therefore the bailiff was ordered to take the said swarm into the hand of the lord and thereafter be answerable to the lord. And that John Ussher the miller took tolls by a measure without seal and therefore he was at mercy [no amount given] Amercement ijs jd [2s 1d] John Bande the elder and Robert Partrych, constables, present that Gilbert iiijd [4d] Lobyer and Thomas xijd [12d] Pridde illegally took from the lord’s hayward. Therefore they are amerced. And that John Rudland the hayward lawfully called the hue on the said Gilbert iijd [3d] and Thomas iiijd [4d] and therefore they are amerced. And that William ijd [2d] Flandyle of Blunham unlawfully called the hue on John Abel, by the pledge of the constables. Therefore he is amerced. Amercement xijd [12d] William Rydere and Robert Myton tasters of ale present that John vjd [6d] Goffe constantly, Thomas iiijd [4d] Rydere ij [2], William ijd [2d] Starlyng j [1], brewed and sold ale and broke the assize. Therefore they are amerced. Amercement ijd [2d] a day Robert Fesaund recognizes that William his son is outside a tithing therefore he is amerced. And it was ordered that William be granted a day against the next [court] to be enrolled in a tithing. Heriot one horse valued at xiijs iiijd [13s 4d] Also the aforesaid sworn men present that Thomas Rydere who held one messuage and half a virgate of land from the lord according to the custom of the Manor, with services rendering therefrom to the lord xiijs iiijd [13s 4d] a year, closed his existence after the day of the last Court. After whose death a new herriott of one bay horse valued at xiijs iiijd [13s 4d] falls due to the lord and the bailiff is answerable. And that the same Thomas held one other tenement and half a virgate of land and no heriot is due because the enquiry has confirmed and Thomas has been respited by the steward. And to the same court came Joan, wife of the said Thomas and she claimed to hold the said holding from the lord according to the custom of the manor on her own and it was granted it to her according to the custom of the Manor and she made fealty. Herriott of one horse valued at vijs [7s] and one bullock valued at vs [5s] Also they present that Henry Yarwey who held two messuages and two virgates of land from the lord according to the custom of the manor closed his existence after the day of the last Court and after whose death a new herriot of one horse valued at vijs [7s] and one bullock valued at vs [5s] falls due to the lord and was rendered to the bailiff. And that the same Henry held one other messuage and one virgate of land and one toft and half a virgate of land and no herriott is owed for them because it has been imposed by the steward against his will and confirmed by the their [the homage’s] enquiry. And to the same court came Joan, wife of the said Henry, and she claimed to hold the said holding herself according to the custom of the manor and it was granted to her, and she made fealty. Cottages in the hand of the lord. Profit nil, iijd [sic 3d ] above account And they present that ij [2] Cottages, which lately were held by Robert Tele, according to the custom of the manor and by services, rendering therefrom to the lord iiijs [4s] a year, remain in the hand of the lord there being no tenant. And the profits of the same do not have any value this year, only xijd [12d] from them, a loss of iijs [3s] And that Nicholas Mergrete who took from the lord one messuage and half a virgate of land which [was] of Felicia Prentys, according to the custom of the manor, has withdrawn outside the parish and so the said holding [is] in the hand of the lord because there is no tenant who would have rendered xiijs iiijd [13s 4d] a year for the messuage and two virgates of land and the profits from them [are] of no value this year, only vs xjd [5s 11d] in total and so the loss this year [is] vijs vd [7s 5d] Distrained Robert Myton complains against John Rydere concerning a plea of trespass and the said John has not contested [it], therefore he is to be distrained. Xij [12] sworn men John Gostwyk John Warner Richard Lygtfot William Tayllour John Maryon’ Thomas Stoughton Thomas Sterlyng John Norman Robert Myton’ William Wryght the younger John Rudland John Passewatyr Fine xijd [12d] They present that John Yarwey the elder took sheaves of barley lying in the fields at autumn time this year, the fifth of the reign [1417} valued at vjd [6d] from the goods and chattels of John Myton and John Gostwyk. And he carried away the said sheaves, against the peace of the lord King. Therefore it was ordered that John himself [is] to take and hold as much fine as the lord determines for the aforesaid offence . And afterwards the same John gave xijd [12d] to the lord as fine. The Bailiff is ordered to sell the said poplar [illegible] Also they present that Master William Cook has cut down one large poplar valued at xld [40d] on the holding that John Crook held from the lord, and they are ignorant of his intention. Therefore they consulted with the council of the lord. And finally the bailiff was ordered to sell [it] and be responsible to the lord for the true value. And that in the time of the steward, John Preston, John Gaubryel took from the lord one Messuage and x [10] acres of land for the term of his life, on which messuage the same John destroyed one Insethouse with a solar that is still not put right. Therefore it was ordered to him that he should make the said Insethouse before the feast of St. Michael next in the future under a penalty of xxs [20s].
