Margarent Gotzheim, wife of Augustus Gotzheim of Leighton Buzzard, lodging house keeper – Sarah Jackman is a stranger to Leighton Buzzard. On 12 July Peter Shirer, his wife and Sarah Jackman occupied a bedroom at their house for the night. The next morning Jackman left between 11am and 12pm. Shirer and his wife stayed. The next morning 14th July Shirer made a complaint to him of having lost a day shirt from his carpet bag in the bedroom. On 12th he had seen Mrs Shirer ironing a shirt the same as the one produced though the collar has been cut off and wristbands partly stitched since she saw it. Mary Burbige, wife of Benjamin Burbige of Newport Pagnell (Bucks), fireman on the London and North Western Railway – on 13th July about 4pm she heard someone talking in the second hand shop she keeps in Silver Street, Newport Pagnell. Her servant girl brought her a calico shirt with a linen front and wrist bands. She could see through into the shop. Jackman was there. She gave a shilling for the shirt. She took the collar off the shirt and stitched one of the wristbands round and had begun the other when PC Pilson came for it and took it away. She knew Jackman by sight. She had bought things from her before, about a year ago. Christopher Pilson, police constable stationed at Newport Pagnell (Bucks) – on Wednesday 19th July he received information of the loss of a shirt. He went to Mary Burbige’s shop and received the shirt produced from her. Allen Robert Stedley, superintendent of police for Fenny Stratford division (Bucks) – Sarah Jackman was convicted at the Newport Pagnell Bench on 29 March 1876 for stealing a coat and handkerchief value 8s from John Hedge at Fenny Stratford on 20 March 1876, and was sentenced to 21 days hard labour at the House of Correction at Aylesbury.
