    Headship Applications Administration
  • Scope and Content
INTRODUCTION A series of files which originally contained the administrative procedure surrounding appointment of a new head teacher (lists of candidates, invitations for interview, confirmation of interview dates with governors and local authority representative (where appropriate)) etc. The files also contained information about the character, size, aims and objectives of the school and it is this information that has been retained, the administrative papers being repetitive and containing little or no information of value. CATALOGUE STRUCTURE The material is split into two classes, Luton Borough schools and schools in the rest of the county. This is due to the differing school organisations of the two areas. Within each class, schools are grouped by age range. Thus Luton has the following groups: 1. Nursery schools: children below the age of 5 2. Infant schools: children aged 5-7 3. Junior schools: children aged 7-11 4. Primary schools: children aged 5-11, i.e. a primary school serves as both infant and junior school in one. Primary schools co-exist with both infant and junior schools 5. High schools: children aged 11-16 6. Luton VI Form College: students aged 16-18 The schools in the rest of the county are grouped as follows: 1. Nursery schools: children below the age of 5 2. Lower schools: children aged 5-9 3. Middle schools: children aged 9-13 4. Upper schools: children aged 13-18 5. Special schools: children of varying age ranges but with physical, behavioural or other difficulties Within the two groups schools are arranged alphabetically by parish (where applicable) and within that alphabetically by school name. NATURE OF MATERIAL The files contain widely different information. However, two documents recur relatively often. Form 1 (Advertisements for Headships) and Form 2 (Memoranda detailing size, accommodation and other general information). The details on these forms change in some detail over time but remain basically the same. Each school entry gives a brief list of the nature of the material preserved. Material of a more unusual nature is also listed. Less detailed material is not listed individually but noted collectively e.g. "other background material".
