Scope and Content
Form 618G was an annual statistical return to the Ministry of Education compiled by the Education Department providing details of the distribution, numbers and qualifications of teachers in the authority's schools. The returns were initially compiled separately for Luton Borough, Bedford Borough and the rest of the County area before being used to compile a return for the whole County. These returns generated correspondence concerning not only statistics but also relating to wider educational issues such as the recruitment of married women into teaching, teacher shortages, appointment of Head Teachers and the impact of immigrant children in Bedford and Luton schools.
The files contain the following significant items:
- Draft Form 618G returns
- List of Schools regarding the numbers of pupils and teachers of each school
- Internal Education Department memoranda on the staffing situation in the schools particularly in regard to shortages and the quota of teachers authorised to be on the County establishment by the Ministry of Education
- Correspondence with the Ministry of Education, Bedford and Luton Borough Education Committees, other Local Education Authorities and, occasionally, other organisations such as the Central Advisory Council for Education.
