    John Walker of Pirton (Herts), dealer – on Saturday 8 April he left his coat at the Crown Inn, Barton about 7am. About 3pm he went for it but could not find it. From what he heard he went to the Coach and Horses with a man named Purser. He saw Furr who had his coat on under a pilot coat. [Cross-examined] He did not say “let us make it up”. He never had a drop of Furr’s beer. They gave him 3 half crowns not to press the charge. He has been convicted 5 times at Hitchin. David Purser of Barton, labourer – on Saturday he went to fetch soot from Harlington and afterwards when with Walker to the Coach and Horses. He took the coat off Furr and he said “somebody put it on me”. He asked Furr if his mother dressed him. [Cross-examined] They all went back to the Crown. They never had a drop of the beer. He has been convicted for hay stealing. Robert Abbey of Barton – he lives at the Crown, Barton. He refused Furr beer because he thought he had had sufficient. He believes it was done in a lark. James Clarke of Barton, police constable – on Sunday 9 April he received the coat from James Walker. He took Furr into custody. [Cross-examined] Furr said it was a lark. Albert Furr – “I am not guilty” Evidence for Defence --------------------------- Samuel Furr of Barton, labourer – on 10 April this case was adjourned. He later met Walker in the street. Walker came to himself and George Elliott and said it was a foolish job. They went and had a glass of beer. He asked what Walker wanted. Walker said ten shillings. He then asked for 3 half crowns for his trouble. George Elliott of Shillington, builder – he was in George Street, Luton with Furr. Walker cam and said “it is a drunken sort of a job” and that if they would pay his expenses he would not come again. He later helped Walker into the cart he was so drunk.
