- Scope and ContentMary Eliza Farrer of Cardington, domestic servant – she lives at Fenlake in the parish of Cardington. She was coming to Bedford on Thursday evening 13 April at 6.30. Knight stood against some posts. He followed her and indecently assaulted her. She say a man coming and Knight ran off. She had never seen him before. She went on to Bedford. She told her mistress Mrs White of the assault that evening when she got home. Samuel Rowney of St Paul, Bedford – when he was going to Fenlake on Thursday evening 13 April he saw a man walking towards Fenlake from Potter Street. Just before he came to the mile post on the Fenlake Road the man came to the posts that cross the footpath and made a sudden stop. He saw a female coming along the path towards Bedford. The man made his way towards Bedford. He turned round and watched. The man caught the female by running and walking, about 250 yards from where she passed him. He saw them struggle. He ran to her assistance. When he got within about 50 yards of them the man got his hat and ran away. The female told him her name. He pursued the man across the fields and caught him on the London Road. He told the man what he had seen. The man said he would not come back with him as he was going home, but would give his name. The man said his name was Bull of Harrowden. A Harrowden man came up and said there was no such name living at Harrowden. The prisoner then said his name was John Holding of Cople. Abraham Kennedy of Gadsby Street, St Paul, Bedford – after receiving information of the offence he went to Cople yesterday morning to Thomas Knight’s house where he found the prisoner. He told Knight a young woman had complained to him of being assaulted and that he believed Knight gave a wrong name. Knight accompanied him to Mrs White’s at Fenlake. Mary Eliza Farrer identified him as the man who assaulted her. He apprehended Knight. Samuel Knight – reserves his defence
