  • Scope and Content
George Meeks: a labourer of Girtford and on 3 December he had been working for Rev J Richardson of Sandy in Popes Farm near the railway siding. He was in the barn with George Bywater when the prisoner came to them and asked if Meeks could go and help him put carrots in his cart. Meeks agreed and helped him fill 3 sacks and put them in the cart. He asked the prisoner if he had bought the carrots and the prisoner said he had and that they were Bill Jeeves and that he would sell the best and keep the others for the pony. He then took the carrot away in the pony and cart. George Bywater: a labourer living in Girtford and on 3 December he had been a work with the witness Meeks. The prisoner came into the yard and asked for help in lifting carrots onto his cart. He sent Meeks to assist. Henry Jones: an agent for the Singer Sewing Machine Co and residing in Bedford. On 5 December he bought a ton of carrots from the prisoner. On purchasing the carrots he asked the prisoner if they were his own and the prisoner said he grew them on his land but if he does not have enough he buys them to make up a ton. He paid £1 15s 0d for the carrots. He was shown carrots by PC Cheshire and they correspond with the carrots he purchased. He paid Punter £1 15s 0d as Punter’s wife had a machine a fortnight previous and they had agreed for £1 15s 0d to be reduced from the machine price. William Jeeves: a gardener living in Sandy and occupying an allotment in the “roods”. He had 5 heaps of carrots lying there which he last saw safe on the 2 December. On 5 December he missed some of the carrots valued at 4shillings. On 26 January he was in the company of PC Cheshire when he took samples of the carrots from one of his heaps. He did not sell any carrots to Punter. Statement of the accused: he did not steal the carrots. Mr Jeeves provided them to him for the 5 shillings he owed him.
