    Ellen Smith of Oakley – she is 7 years old. Her mother lives with her at Oakley. She saw John Moore a fortnight last Tuesday night. He was breaking sticks against the pantry window. She saw Isaac Hewlatt that day, going up the allotment. Hulatt spoke to her. She went with him against the closet. He called “Nell”. When she was by the closet he put his hand up her clothes. She came away. [Cross-examined] She did not call out. He did not do anything else. It was dark but moonlight. Moore was against the fence. She did not see Moore until afterwards. Hulatt stood in front of her. John Moore of Oakley – he is 10 years old. He was getting faggots against Smith’s pantry window. He saw Hulatt. He seemed as if he was coming from Ball’s front door around Ball’s pig sty. Smith was in the house. He went to him. Smith came with him out of the house. They went round to the corner of the closet. Smith stopped half way. He saw Isaac Hewlett standing round Ball’s pig sty. He peeped round Smith’s closet door. He saw Isaac Hewlett’s flaps down … He went back again to George Smith. Before they got back Ellen Smith came round the corner. She complained that Isaac Hewlett had put his hand up her clothes … [description of assault] [Cross-examined] She was about 3 yards from him when he looked round the corner. She was standing still. He did not tell her what he had seen. He told his mother the same night. He did not tell Hulett he had seen it. When Hewlett came fromt eh barn he said “Isaac Hewlett what have you been doing?” He did not answer. Emily Jane Smith of Oakley – she is a widow. A fortnight last Thursday she heard something. Her child complained of her legs aching. She examined her … The girl complained of Isaac Hewlett. George Robinson of Harpur Street, St Paul Bedford, surgeon – he examined Ellen Smith this morning. He found no marks of violence … [results of examination inconclusive]. Isaac Hulatt - I am not guilty.
