  • Scope and Content
William Meager of Leighton Buzzard, blacksmith – Wright is a stranger to him. On 2 September he saw Wright outside the Bell and Woolpack public house at Leighton. Wright asked him to go for a walk. He went with Wright, who said Mrs Rogers at the Bell and Woolpack was his aunt. Wright asked if he had any money to lend him. He said no. Wright said Mrs Rogers had £16 of his money and would pay him in the morning, and that there was about £900 in the London and County Bank. The next day he saw Wright in his gateway at Leighton. Wright asked if he had any silver in his pocket. He said he had some upstairs. Wright asked him to lend him 4s 6d and said he had money in the bank. On that representation he lent him 4s 6d. The next day he saw Wright again. Wright said he had paid Mr Pettit all his money and could not pay him at that time. On the Saturday Wright asked him to lend him more money. He lent him 1s 6d, only because he thought from what Wright said that he had money. Eliza Rogers, wife of Thomas Rogers of Leighton Buzzard, innkeeper of the Bell and Woolpack – she is no relation whatever to Wright. She is not his aunt. She never saw him until he came to her for lodgings on 30 August. He stayed at her house about a week until the following Tuesday week when he left. He left in her debt. She never had £16 to keep for him. On Monday 6 September Wright gave the document produced to her daughter in her presence. It purports to be Wright’s will. Wright told her he had no relations. James Quilter Rumball, manager of the Leighton Branch of the London and County Bank – he knows Wright by sight. Wright has no money in their bank and never has to his knowledge. Wright is not on their books at all and has had no business transactions with the bank. Last week Wright came to the bank and said he possessed property at Luton and wanted him to be trustee to receive the rents. He declined to have anything to do with Wright whatever and never saw him again. George Athies Wright – he does not wish to say anything.
