George Burgess of Biggleswade, police constable – on Xmas Eve he was on duty on the Market Hill. At about 12.30pm he heard a noise and saw Bradshaw, James Leonard, and another he did not know. He went towards them. They were 10 or 11 yards from the old Shambles which are occupied by Charles Huckle. They ran away. He ran after Leonard who dropped the basket with its contents. He then went with PC Cain to Anchor End, Biggleswade and apprehended Bradshaw. He charged him with stealing a basket and its contents from Charles Huckle’s shop. Bradshaw said “I did not steal it Bogsy Leonard did from Huckles”, and said Leonard gave him 7 combs which he took to Mrs Albone’s. He took Bradshaw to the police station where he was searched. The tobacco box now produced was found on him. Ebenezer Cain of Biggleswade, police constable – he was on duty in Biggleswade on the night of Xmas Eve. About 1am he went with PC Burgess to Anchor End and assisted him with apprehending Bradshaw. When charged Bradshaw said Leonard stole the items. He went to Mrs Albone and she gave him the combs he now produces. Sarah Albone of Biggleswade, widow – she knows Bradshaw. He came to her house on the night of Xmas Eve and said “Granny I’ve got two or three old combs”. He said Bogsy Leonard gave them to her to comb her hair out. He left them with her and she gave them to PC Cain. Charles Huckle of Biggleswade, furniture dealer – he lives on Market Hill and keeps a shop there. His shop is part of the old shambles and does not join any dwelling house. He saw the shop safely fastened up on Thursday evening 24 December, with an asp and staple. On Friday morning about 3am he was called up by PC Cain who showed him the 7 combs and tobacco box now produced which he identifies as his property. PC Cain also showed him the basket and his contents which he also identifies. He found the asp or hook and staple on the Market Hill. They were inside the Shambles and could only be unfastened from the inside. The door had been forced open. Henry Bradshaw – he did not steal the combs. He had them given to him by James Leonard and John Endersby. They had their pockets full. He heard them against the Shambles as he was in the Crown Yard. Leonard gave him seven combs.
