  • Scope and Content
Mrs. Grant. Shall call on Mrs. Russell in St. Margaret Street as soon as possible. Hurt to hear Miss Williamson was several days at Bedford but did not call or send over to Kempston - not possessed of a heart like yours. Mr. Pansford's coming. Ball: 15 couple; first coffee, tea, cake cake etc.; then Sophia began the dance with Capt. Urquhart; son danced with Miss Charlotte Jackson & Miss Jenny Ray. About 10.30 a genteel cold collation, great order & decorum. After supper young people danced again, & those that chose played cards (I lost 2 rubbers of whist before supper, so chose to sit in dancing-room for rest of night). Ball ended 2-3 a.m. Sophia asks for account of trimming of hats - feathers? she is touching up last year's hat, which she wishes to have a little modern. Son killed his beautiful grey mare the other day, leaping her over the bar (35 guineas gone). Young Whitbread has been near dying - fall from horse. Son gone to bed, tired with fox-chase.
