Letter from John Cater, Portsmouth. Likely to stay here. We go with part of new raised 89th regiment. Cannot be tolerably cheerful even in appearance without constraint, in reality I never expect to be so. May none ever experience half what I have endured! Miss jackson treated me in such a manner I shall never forget. Wishes for her future. But her remaks - 'don't intrude' etc., - tortures! torments!
